One of the hardest things to teach our kids about love is the idea of loving our enemies, because it’s so hard for us to do it ourselves.
We wrote Jesus Embraced Parenting because we realized that being a parent is so much more than just providing our kids with easy answers. As Christians, we have to be willing to do the hard stuff and then teach them about it too.
One of the fruits of the spirit is love but the idea of loving those who we don’t like is especially tough because we can get confused about what that means. In Luke 6:27-36, Jesus is asking us to do practical acts of love: do good, pray, offer a second chance, give, lend, forgive. He isn’t asking us to join them in their sins. He isn’t asking us to let them keep abusing us. But he is telling us to show love to everyone, whether we think they deserve love or not. That is a tough standard to model to our kids, but it’s a healthy one.
We invite others to join us in discovering what it’s like to be a Christian parent who teaches and models God’s truth to their kids. This study asks tough questions at times, but it is so worth learning how to help our children grow spiritually.
God bless,
